Ann T. Bicknell
Scholarship
In memory of her unselfish efforts and
her dedication to the needs of older adults, the Gerontology
Program at Slippery Rock University has established the Ann T.
Bicknell Memorial Scholarship. Intended to assist
students in the study of gerontology, the scholarship is funded
through the generous contributions of faculty, students, alumni,
the Gerontology Program and friends of Slippery Rock
University.
In the early 1970s, Dr. Ann T. Bicknell provided the leadership
for a small group of faculty who initiated a program of study in
the rapidly developing discipline of gerontology. This
interest was formalized into an interdisciplinary certification
program in June 1979.
During the 1980s, the Gerontology Program continued to grow,
with the establishment of a minor in 1983 and the Graduate
Certificate Program in 1990. In addition to expanding the
education programs, many outreach projects, like the local and
international Elderhostels were developed to provide services for
older adults in conjunction with their service providers.
Following the leadership of Dr. Bicknell, the Gerontology
Program continues to promote a progressive curricula and
opportunities for scholarship in the field of gerontology.
