Year of Rachel Carson – SRU PLANS PROGRAM TO ENCOURAGE
WOMEN TO CONSIDER SCIENCE CAREERS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – As part of the on-going “Year
of Rachel Carson” in Slippery Rock and at Slippery Rock
University, an all-day workshop titled “Rachel Carson as a
Role Model: Encouraging Females to Consider Science Careers”
will be held at the university Oct. 19. The program is funded, in
part, by the National Science Foundation.
The
session opens at 9 a.m. in McKay Education Building and is being
held in cooperation with the Rachel Carson Homestead of Springdale.
It is being organized by Dr. Patsy Ann Johnson, professor of
secondary education at SRU. Other sponsors include SRU’s
College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, the Center for
Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, and the statewide
Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation in
Pennsylvania.
The
lectures will provide an overview of the history of women in
science, information about Rachel Carson, including comparisons in
her life to patterns evident among women scientists, employment
statistics concerning American women and activities teachers can
use to encourage students to consider choosing science careers.
Lunch will be provided and all kindergarten through college faculty
will receive a $100 stipend. Act 48 credit is also available.
SRU
