SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY TO OFFER A SLIDING-SCALE FEE FOR DAYCARE TO HELP NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS ATTAIN A COLLEGE EDUCATION

           SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Thanks to a federal grant, Slippery Rock University’s daycare center on campus will make it easier for local parents to attend college by offering a sliding-scale fee for childcare, based on income.

           “Basically, this is for non-traditional students. It will cover all or a portion of their childcare costs, helping them go to school,” says Cathy George, business manager of the Student Government Association, which applied for a grant to launch the program in January.

           The U.S. Department of Education provided $154,628 to fund the first four years of the program. The Slippery Rock Childcare Access program is for children 3 to 6, with an after-school program for children 6 to 12. The preschool meets at McKay Education Building, staffed by two professionals and education majors from the university.

           While there is no waiting list for the daycare, the program is open to SRU students only. Call 724-738-2102 to register.
