A quick reminder that Slippery Rock University is celebrating its homecoming weekend beginning today [Oct. 4] with events that put the spotlight on a number of local and former leaders. The events will offer ample opportunities for feature photos. Those planning to staff any of the events are asked to call 724-738-2199. (A detailed release was sent last month and is available at: www.SRU.edu

Today’s events:

4 p.m., dedication of the C. Douglas Clinger Exercise Science Laboratory in the Pearl K. Stoner Instructional Complex, East Gym. (The late Mr. Clinger was a former SRU faculty member, assistant football coach and well-known Grove City leader.)

6 p.m., pre-homecoming pep rally with SRU football coach Dr. George Mihalik, his team, the SRU cheerleaders  and the Marching Pride, outside Bailey Library. Crowning of homecoming king and queen – and fireworks.

8:30 p.m., The Clarks, a top Pittsburgh rock group, perform in the University Union. Tickets $10 for SRU students; $20 for the general public. – This is a sold out event – 1,200 tickets. Press passes can be arranged.

Saturday:        

10 a.m., Haunted Homecoming Parade kicks off from Giant Eagle Plaza with Professor emeritus Blase Scarnati as parade marshal. (Mr. Scarnati is a professor emeritus of music at SRU and current conductor of the popular Musicians’ Concert Band – a 100-member community band. At noon a band practice field will be dedicated in his honor. See below.)

11:15 a.m., New Alumni Association Picnic Pavilion Dedication (near Jack Critchfield Park)

11:30 a.m., Alumni Association Tailgate at Ski Lodge

Noon, Dedication of Blase S. Scarnati Marching Band Field (near Aebersold Recreation Center)

2 p.m., SRU vs. California University of Pennsylvania, N. Kerr Thompson Stadium

11 a.m., women’s field hockey game with Washington & Jefferson

1 p.m., women’s soccer game with Millersville

3 p.m., men’s soccer game with Millersville

Post-game reception at Russell Wright Alumni House

8 p.m. Minority alumni reception, Russell Wright Alumni House

10 p.m., Homecoming Cabaret, sponsored by the Student Union for Minority Affairs and the Black Action Society in the University Union. Tickets $10.

SRU’ annual homecoming is sponsored by the SRU Alumni Association, the Office of Student Life, University Program Board, and the Student Government Association.
