Memorandum
TO:
All Employees and Students of Slippery Rock University
and
Other Concerned Persons and Organizations
FROM: G. Warren Smith
President
TOPIC: REAFFIRMATION OF
EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
POLICY
STATEMENT
Slippery Rock
University is committed to building a diverse
community. We reaffirm our commitment to the
philosophy and policy of equal employment
opportunity. We intend to comply with both the
letter and the spirit of: Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act
of 1964, Title IX of the Educational Amendment of 1972, Section 504
of the Rehabilitation Act of 1972, the Americans with Disabilities
Act of 1990, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and all other
relevant state and federal legislation and executive
orders.
Our affirmative
action/equal employment opportunity policy applies to students,
faculty, staff, administrators, employment applicants, applicants
for admission, vendors and participants in university-sponsored
programs and events.
We intend to
maintain a climate which is free from any form of harassment or
discrimination. Such conduct has no place in a caring
community. We will provide reasonable
accommodations for qualified persons with disabilities.
Slippery Rock
University’s strategic plan for 2000 through 2003 states that
one of our goals is to: “Identify, promote and assess those
values, services, best practices and experiences which result in
diversity among faculty, students, administrators, staff and other
constituents.” To that end the following
objectives were established:
- Slippery Rock University will
increase minority enrollment.
- Slippery Rock University will
increase the number of minority faculty and staff
employees.
- Slippery Rock University will
be a safe and encouraging environment for women.
- Slippery Rock University will
increase understanding of the value of a diverse
society.
- Slippery Rock University will
be in compliance with Title IX.
Specific
initiatives for meeting these objectives may be found in the
university’s Performance and Outcomes Plan.
It is my
expectation that everyone at Slippery Rock University will do
his/her part to help make the ideals and goals outlined above
become a reality. Each manager and supervisor is
responsible for ensuring that all employment decisions comply with
equal opportunity principles. Each dean,
department chair and search committee is charged with aggressively
seeking women and minority candidates, especially where
underrepresented. Each and every Slippery Rock
University employee is responsible for bringing to the
administration’s attention any harassment, discrimination, or
employment decision he/she feels conflicts with law or
policy. If you have questions about the
affirmative action/equal employment opportunity plan, contact the
Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity, Slippery Rock
University, 305 Old Main, Slippery Rock, PA
16057. The phone number is 724-738-2016, and the
