The fundamental mission of the Department of Biology is to
provide students with a comprehensive, contemporary understanding
of the biological sciences by enthusiastically offering experiences
that are stimulating and challenging. The goal of these efforts is
to foster an appreciation for the complexities of living systems
and to promote the development of competent biologists and
scientifically literate citizens equipped for life-long
learning.

The Department of Biology is housed in the College of Health, Environment, and Science
with 12 fulltime faculty and
approximately 250 undergraduate majors. The faculty are a diverse
group with research interests in molecular, cellular, organismal,
and population biology. Whatever their individual specialization,
each of the faculty share a commitment to their students. As such,
Biology majors at Slippery Rock University have the opportunity to
work closely with faculty, whether in the classroom, laboratory, or
field.
Our curricula introduce the student to basic biological
principles at the molecular, cellular, organismal, and population
levels. Regardless of your interests and long-term goals, the degree programs offered by the
Department of Biology will prepare you well. The programs provide
either breadth of training in the biological sciences,
concentrations in botany or zoology, or concentrations in the
paramedical fields of Medical Technology and Cytotechnology.
Students may take a sequence of courses that will prepare them for
graduate work, industry, teaching, professional schools, or further
study at schools of allied health.
