APPLYING FOR VETERANS EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS AT SRU

Applications and appropriate documentation should be completed at the SRU Veterans Affairs Office at least 8-12 weeks prior to your term starting date to ensure timely processing. Application materials will be forwarded to the Regional Processing Office in Buffalo. GI Bill checks are sent directly to the student, not the university.

   Chapter 30 – Montgomery GI Bill – served Active Duty in the regular Armed Forces.

   Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill for qualified members of the Reserves or National Guard    

   Chapter 31 Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation for veterans with a service-connected disability

   Chapter 35 – Dependents Education Assistance program for spouses or children of veterans with service-connected death/disability.

Application Procedures:

New Applicants under Chapter 30 or 1606: If you qualify for the Chapter 30 or 1606 educational benefit program and have never used it before, you will complete an original Application for VA Education Benefits at the SRU Veterans Affairs Office. In addition, you will be required to provide one or more of the following documents:

  • courthouse-certified (by the Court Recorder) copy #4 of DD214 (Chapter 30 applicants)
  • signed copy of completed NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility) form, issued by Reserve/Guard unit (Chapter 1606 applicants)
  • if eligible for a "kicker", copy of Kicker Contract.
  • ACF (Army College Fund) confirmation or lump sum contribution payment verification (Chapter 30 applicants)
  • If you elect to have your GI Bill payments direct deposited, will need to provide bank name and routing number as well as checking account.

New Applicants under Chapter 35: You will be required to submit an original application, and must supply the name, social security number, date of birth, and claim or service number of the veteran. If you have already established eligibility for Chapter 35, you must supply your claim number and/or a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility.

New Applicants under Chapter 31: Eligibility for Chapter 31, Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation, is determined by the Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation counselor at the Pittsburgh Regional Office (1000 Liberty Avenue) at 412-395-6072. Once Chapter 31 benefits have been approved, the school will be sent an authorization form to complete. Student Accounts Office will be notified for billing purposes, and the Bookstore will be notified that the student may purchase books.

Transfer Students: Students who have previously used the above benefits must complete a Change of School/Program form at the SRU Veterans Affairs Office.

Payment Methods:

  •  "Regular Pay" - check is sent to you after each month is completed.
  •  "Advance Pay" - you are paid in advance for the first partial and first full month of attendance (advance paychecks may be picked up in the Veterans Affairs Office located in 107 Maltby Center at the beginning of the semester). .  Subsequent checks are sent to you after each month is completed.  

GI Bill Certification Form:

An enrollment certification form will be sent to you each spring. This information is used to certify your GI Bill for subsequent semesters, after your initial enrollment. If you do not return this form indicating your enrollment information, you will not be certified for future GI Bill education benefits.  The form can be printed by clicking here.

Monthly Enrollment Verification (Chapter 30 and Chapter 1606)

Chapter 30 and Chapter 1606 veterans must verify their enrollment on the last day of each month enrolled before the next GI Bill payment is issued. You can verify your enrollment in the following ways:
