M.A. in Community Counseling

Goals and Competencies

This is a specialized practitioner's degree designed to prepare students to work as counselors in human service agencies.

The three areas of counseling specialization within the Master of Arts Degree in Community Counseling are:

  • Adult Counseling

  • Addiction Counseling

  • Child and Adolescent Counseling

The degree requires 60 semester hours of graduate study, of which 6 semester hours are devoted to a specialization track, a 3 hour elective and 12 hours of Field Work.

CORE I - BASIC KNOWLEDGE (15 credit hours)

  • Students may not take Core III coursework until they have completed Core I coursework.

 

CORE II - ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE (12 credit hours)

CDev 607 Models of Adaptive Behavior

CDev 611 Family Counseling

CDev 612 Group Counseling

CDev 680 Principles of Appraisal

  • Students may take Core III coursework concurrent with Core II coursework.

 

CORE III - AREA OF SPECIALIZATION (6 credit hours)

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT EMPHASIS

CDev 618 Systems of Adaptive Behavior (formerly Psychopathology of Childhood and Adolescence)

CDev 685 Youth Counseling (formerly Counseling the Child and Adolescent)

 

ADDICTION EMPHASIS

CDev 626 Psychology of Addiction

CDev 636 Counseling the Addict (Prerequisite: CDev 621, CDev 670)

 

ADULT EMPHASIS

CDev 619 Psychology of Adulthood

CDev 617 Counseling the Adult

  • Students may not enroll in Core V until Core I, II, and III are completed.

 

CORE IV - ADDITIONAL REQUIRED COURSEWORK (15 credit hours)

CORE V - FIELD EXPERIENCE (12credit hours)

CDev 701 Community Counseling Practicum (3 credits)

CDev 751 Coummunity Counseling Internship (6 credits)

CDev 703 Practicum in Counselor Supervision (3 credits)

  • Students must complete Cores I-III prior to Core V. Core IV coursework may be taken at any time in a student's program of study.

Students must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 QPA and have completed Core III prior to taking the oral comprehensive examination. The oral comprehensive examination is taken near the end of a student's program, and is conducted by a committee of faculty members and covers all facets of the graduate program.
