in
The
university has hosted the competition, open to seventh- through
12th-graders, for the past five years. Competitors offer
10-minute oral presentations discussing the results of their
independent, award-winning research projects and judges have an
opportunity to ask questions as part of the student’s
presentation. The top presenters in each discipline earn cash or
U.S. Savings Bonds presented by Region IX. The SRU scholarship,
$2,000 per year over four years, is available to the top junior and
top senior presenters. All students earning “first
place” honors in the competition may also participate in the
state competition held in May.
The
program is coordinated on campus by Dr. William R. Sigmund, SRU
biology professor, who explains, “The event has proven to be
very successful for Region IX, in part, due to the contributions of
faculty, staff, administrators and students who lend a hand in
welcoming and mentoring the budding scientists.” He points
out the visiting students, who have an interest in both science and
math, often have their interests nurtured while familiarizing
themselves with the campus and programs available at
SRU.
Judges
for the competition include college faculty, high school teachers,
leaders in business and medical professions, and college students.
Participating students will assemble for a 12:45 p.m. orientation
in the University Union then will make their presentations
throughout the afternoon. Following dinner in Weisenfluh Dining
Hall, the students will reassemble in the union for a 6 p.m. awards
ceremony. Judges will meet at 11:15 a.m. in Boozel Dining
Hall.
