Cartilage

Hyaline Cartilage contains chondrocytes (cartilage cells)  within a matrix.  Fibers are not visible.  This cartilage lines the ends of bones. Click here for more information on hyaline cartilage.
Elastic Cartilage is found in the walls of the aorta the epiglottis.  It is designed to withstand  tensile forces, but is not very good with compressive forces.  Elastic fibers stain especially well with Verhoff's hematoxylin, they are stained black in the the slide to the left.  They (fibers) are found among the chondrocytes. Click here for a more detailed description of elastic cartilage.
Fibrocartilage contains chondrocytes within a matrix with thick collagen fibers.  This cartilage is found in the intervertebral discs and menisci of the knee. It is designed to deal with compressive forces.  This is fibrocartilage from an intervertebral disc stained with a Trichrome stain.
