GUMP, REBHOLZ PACE ROCK SOFTBALL TO TWINBILL SPLIT

EDINBORO, Pa. – Junior second baseman Jesse Gump (Greensburg/Hempfield HS) and sophomore designated hitter Beth Rebholz (Pittsburgh/Shaler HS) had key hits in the second game Wednesday to lead Slippery Rock University to a 5-1 win over hosting Edinboro University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division softball action.

Edinboro won the first game, 3-1.

The second-game win snapped an eight-game losing streak for The Rock and improved SRU’s record to 9-19 overall, 2-10 in PSAC-West action.

Gump had a leadoff double and scored on Rebholz’s RBI double to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning to send Wednesday’s second game into extra innings.

Gump then put The Rock ahead with an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning. She later scored on Rebholz’s second RBI double of the game.

Nikki Cothran (Kansas City, Mo./Sumner Academy) was the winning pitcher and improved her record to 3-5.

Senior left fielder Erin Kleintop (Palmerton/Palmerton HS) hit a solo home run in the third inning to account for SRU’s only run in the first game.

Sophomore right-hander Candice Nase (Telford/Soudertown HS) was tagged with the loss and fell to 3-5.

The Rock returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Carnegie Mellon University.

SRU hosts California U. of Pa. in a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
