The Harmony Homestead site and permaculture design includes four ponds, which serve as potential sources of irrigation water for the gardens and orchard, as habitat providers for many local flora and fauna and as a food source. In 1999 the ponds were stocked with blue gill and catfish.

Digging the ponds

Ponds were established at the Harmony Homestead and stocked with small fish to eat mosquito larvae as well as oxygenating plants and material furnished for experimentation by Hirth Greenhouse in West Sunbury, PA.            - Source: Alternator Article, September/October 1991.

These habitats now support a variety of aquatic species.
