"Nevermind the things that are as good as new. Let's have some
things that are as good as old." - Anonymous
Beginning
fall 2002, a new recycling education campaign was developed by
Melissa Long (Environmental Education),the recycling coordinator
graduate assistant at the Macoskey Center. Currently, SRU has a
recycling program in place that includes: cardboard, paper, and
commingled glass, cans, and plastic. However opportunity was seen
to develop additional education for students and other
methodologies of this program.
The goal of
this project is to increase recycling in four designated classroom
buildings at Slippery Rock University. The four buildings are:
Eisenberg Classroom Building, McKay Education Building, Strain
Behavioral Science Building and the Vincent Science Hall Building.
This goal will be achieved by educating students, staff and faculty
about the importance and proper methods of recycling. Recycling
facilities will also be enhanced with clearly marked signage in the
classrooms and hallways of these buildings.
Educational media such as posters and signs will be posted in
the classroom buildings to inform the students, faculty and staff
of why and how to recycle. Custodial staff will be consulted on how
to best facilitate the operation of the initiative and to determine
what their responsibilities will be within the project. The
enhancement of recycling facilities will increase the overall
amount of recycled materials collected at SRU, and support the
Office of Environmental Health and Safety's participation in the
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Rush to Recycle
challenge. - Source: Melissa Long, project description,
