SRU SCHEDULES ‘HOLLYWOOD HOMECOMING’ TO WELCOME BACK ALUMNI, FRIENDS OCT. 11

          EDITOR'S NOTE: Last-minute additions: The Pittsburgh rock band PunchLine will perform immediately following the Nov. 10 pep rally outside Bailey Library. (In the event of rain the band will play in the University Union). And, recording artist Marcus Allen will perform at the SUMA/BAS Homecoming Cabaret in the University Union, Oct. 11; tickets are $10 for students and $15 for non-students, in advance; $5 more at the door.

    SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Alumni, parents and friends will be welcomed to a “Hollywood Homecoming” when Slippery Rock University hosts its annual homecoming events Oct. 10-11, including a 10 a.m. on-campus parade and a 2 p.m. football game against Shippensburg University in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

The Oct. 11 homecoming football game will be held on the newly renovated Bob DiSpirito Field  in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. The pre-game parade will move out from the Physical Therapy Building making its way to the stadium along Stadium Drive. The location change was made because of road construction work under way on Main Street through the downtown. Viewing will be possible along the roadway leading past Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center and Jack Critchfield Park. Special on-campus parking will accommodate visitors. The local community is urged to attend.

New this year will be a $100 “Community Pride” award going to the best marching group, float or decorated car from the community. Prizes will also be awarded for “Best Float,” “Best Marching Unit,” and “Best Decorated Car.”

Other SRU sports events scheduled for Oct. 11 include the SRU Cross Country Open at 11 a.m., with the women’s soccer team taking on Kutztown University at noon and the men’s team playing Kutztown at 2 p.m.

           In addition to the “Paint-the-Town” window decorating contest in the business district planned for earlier in the week, the traditional “All-University Photo,” for students, faculty and staff will be taken at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 7 (rain date Oct. 9) outside Bailey Library. A “Pep Rally,” including fireworks, is set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 outside the library where this year’s homecoming king and queen will be crowned and SRU head football coach Dr. George Mihalik will introduce the current team. The Marching Pride, under the direction of James Berry, will perform as will the award-winning SRU cheerleaders.

           The alumni association will also sponsor the Annual Alumni Tailgate beginning at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 11 at the SRU Ski Lodge. Tickets are $10 per person, with children under age 5 admitted free. Admission includes lunch and entertainment. A “Deans’ Welcome Event” will follow the game at the SRU Alumni Picnic Pavilion hosted by the alumni association and Dr. Jane Fulton, dean of the College of Health, Environment and Science; Dr. Jay Hertzog, dean of the College of Education; Dr. Bruce Russell, dean of the College of Business, Information and Social Sciences; Dr. James Kushner, dean of Lifelong Learning; and Dr. William McKinney, dean of the College of the College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts.  Reservations are requested. Admission is $5 per person.

Weekend events will also offer hour-long campus tours departing from the Russell Right Alumni House sponsored by the SRU Alumni Association. The annual “Minority Alumni Reception” will be held at 8 p.m. in the alumni house with admission donations supporting the Intercultural Program Scholarship Fund. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 724-738-2700.

A Women’s Soccer Alumni Reception will conclude the Oct. 11 events at 8 p.m. in the alumni house. Head coach Noreen Herlihy and Paul Lueken, athletic director, will lead the 10th-year celebration of women’s soccer at The Rock. Cost is $5 per person. A women’s soccer alumni game is set for noon Oct. 12.
