Bachelor of Science in Education - Certification in Spanish K-12 for Elementary
Education Majors Progress Sheet

Spanish certification is K-12.  All students seeking certification will be certified to teach Spanish in grades K-12.  Therefore, you may follow the regular BS Ed sheet.  However, the courses listed before are recommended for those students who are also seeking ELED certification.

Basic Skill Courses:  (0-18 hours).  These credits may be exempted through a department placement exam, AP credits or CLEP credits. Native speakers should consult the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.

______ 200 Spanish Grammar and Composition I (every spring) Spanish 103 or equivalent
______ 201 Spanish Conversation I (every fall) Spanish 103 or equivalent
______ 220 Reading in Spanish (every fall) Spanish 103 or equivalent
Required Spanish Courses:  (24 hours)
______ 350 Spanish Phonetics and Linguistics 6 hours at the 200-level
______ 300 Spanish Grammar & Composition II (every fall) Spanish 200 and 201 or 220
______ 302 Comm. in Spanish for ELED Majors (Spring 2003) Spanish 201
______ 400 Spanish Grammar & Comp III (every fall) 9 hours at the 300-level including 300

One of the following civilization courses:
______ 305 Spanish Civilization (even spring) 6 hours at the 200-level
______ 306 The Civilization of South America (odd spring) 6 hours at the 200-level
______ 307 U.S. Spanish-Speaking Minority Cultures (odd fall) 6 hours at the 200-level.
______ 308 The Civilization of Mexico/Central America (even fall) 6 hours at the 200-level.
 
The following civilization course:  Offered every third semester.
______ 309 Hispanic Civilization for the Elem. Classroom (recommended for Elem. focus) (Spring 2005) 6 hours at the 200 level
 
The following literature survey courses:   Offered every third semester.
______ 318 Hispanic Children's Literature (recommended for elementary focus) (Spring 2004) 6 hours at the 200-level.
______ 330 Spanish Literature: 1800 to Present (even spring) Spanish 220 and 200 or 201
______ 332 Spanish-American Literature: 19th Century to Present (odd spring) Spanish 220 and 200 or 201
 
One of the following literature courses:  Offered in rotation; one every fall semester.
______431 Medieval through 18th Peninsular Literature (odd fall) 6 hours at the 300-level
______432 Early Latin American  Literature (even fall) 6 hours at the 300-level
 
Spanish Electives:  For students, such as native speakers, who exempt any of the required core. Any Spanish course may be used in this block except 210: Literature in translation.
Education Courses in addition to those required for elementary certification:

________ SEFE 15:323 Teaching of Foreign Modern Languages (every fall) Oral proficiency rating of Intermediate High plus 24 credits in Spanish
________ SEFE 15:329 Elements of Instruction (TR)*  
________ SEFE 15:375 Language Arts Across the Curriculum (TR)* (may be waived)  
________ SEFE 15:426 Practicum in Secondary Education (TR)* Oral proficiency rating of Advanced for student teaching. Student teaching will be one half elementary and one half Spanish.
 
*Field Semester SEFE 200 plus 24 hours toward the specialization. (This may vary depending on your placement.)
 
Study Abroad Program (Highly recommended.)
Students should plan to spend a summer or semester in a country where Spanish is spoken. Credits earned may be used to fill the above requirements.
