Training Aimed at Preparing Directors
for Responsibilities --
SRU TO OFFER WORKSHOPS DETAILING BOARD
OF DIRECTOR DEVELOPMENT
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The rules are changing
for those serving on corporate and non-profit boards of directors
and to address those changes Slippery Rock University’s
Office of Continuing Education has developed two, daylong workshops
designed to provide the critical skills necessary for board
members, chief executive officers and chief financial offices to
better understand their responsibilities and
liabilities.
The
workshops will be offered Jan 9 and Jan. 16 at SRU’s North
Hills Center, and Feb. 6 and Feb. 13 at SRU’s Center for
Community and Lifelong Learning in downtown Slippery Rock. All
sessions open at 9 a.m.
The
sessions will be taught by Philip J. Kennedy, a certified public
accounting and retired associate professor of accounting at SRU who
has served on boards in both profit and not-for-profit
organizations; Lew McEwen, a western Pennsylvania attorney for more
than 25 years and a member of non-profit boards, including 12 years
at the Grove City YMCA; and William Lutz, chief executive officer
of the Franklin/Grove City YMCA and a financial development trainer
for the YMCA’s national organization.
Key
components of the training will include board member recruitment,
pre-board acceptance issues, board orientation, principles of good
governance, trends in board memberships, conflicts of interests,
legal responsibilities, board development, strategic planning,
financial oversight and fundraising, along with a host of other
related topics.
“We
created these special workshops in light of the recent problems,
including fraudulent financial difficulties involving company
directors,” says Richard Comings, director of SRU’s
Office of Continuing Education, adding, “The training will
help those already serving or those who may be asked to serve as
directors to better understand their role and their
responsibilities.”
Program
fees are $425 for both days (or $295 for the one-day general
session; $195 for the one-day financial oversight and fundraising
session.) Lunch is provided.
For
registration materials or other details, call SRU’s Office of
Continuing Education at 724-738-2633.
