SRU TO OFFER FOUR-WEEK CERTIFICATE ON
‘PROFESSIONAL FLORAL DESIGN’
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Those with a flare for color, who enjoy
working with flowers and plants and are considering careers in
floral design work should be interested in Slippery Rock
University’s Office of Continuing Education four-week
“Professional Floral Design” certificate program
opening Jan. 5.
Classes
will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays
throughout January at SRU’s Center for Lifelong and Community
Learning in downtown Slippery Rock and at Crighton’s Florist
and Greenhouse in Prospect. Classes will be taught by Chris
Crighton, floral designer and business owner.
Up-and-coming
designers will learn to express emotions and convey feelings
through flower arrangements.
In
addition to career opportunities in floral shops, the workshops
will provide training for work in related areas, including floral
departments at other types of businesses, opening your own shop or
freelancing for specific work, including
weddings.
The
program will offer 120 hours of instruction and hands-on learning
and will include visits to a church, funeral home and wholesale
flower warehouse.
Sessions
will cover principles of design, using the color wheel and
mechanics, including floral foam, knives, cutters, wires, tapes,
pins, baskets, ceramics, mosses, ribbons and other related topics.
The sessions will offer ideas on the use of fresh flowers,
designing with silk flowers, as well as work in sympathy and
wedding designs.
Fees
for the program are $1,950, including $475 in
consumables.
