MODERN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES ASSESSMENT OF MAJORS AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
BSED Majors
PRE-PROGRAM ASSESSMENT
- All incoming language students with prior knowledge of the language are given a written placement exam. (Students with university credits in any language taught at SRU may transfer them).
ONGOING ASSESSMENT
- Students in 200 or 220, 300 and 400 produce writing samples at the beginning and end of the course. SOPI interviews are conducted in 201, 301, and 401.
- Before enrolling in the methods course, the student must score Intermediate high on the *SOPI.
- The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures highly encourages students to have a concentrated experience abroad in order to achieve an advanced rating. The student who chooses not to study abroad will need to avail him/herself of all of the resources available on and/or off campus- -native speakers, foreign language television, the language laboratory, conversation groups, the Internet, etc.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
- BSED majors are required to take the *ACTFL assessment: *OPI and the *WPT the semester prior to student teaching. A minimum rating of intermediate high as described by the ACTFL guidelines is currently required by the College of Education prior to student teaching. However, the department's goal is to graduate a majority of teachers at the advanced low rating as a minimum, as expected by the ACTFL/NCATE for nationally recognized programs.
- Capstone Project – The semester prior to graduation or student teaching students will identify a cultural/historic topic within the first two weeks of a civilization or literature class. The project must include products, practices and perspectives of the topic. A list of topics will be provided for each class. Topics may deal with cultural phenomena, historical figures, musicians or historical periods. The investigation must demonstrate the long term impact it has had on the respective culture(s). Both the oral and written presentation will be evaluated by a standard rubric.
*SOPI - Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview
*ACTFL - American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages
*OPI - Oral Proficiency Interview
*WPT - Writing Proficiency Testing
