MINIMUM OF 18 HOURS REQUIRED

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures offers the following for a general minor in a second language. All courses in the minor are to be taken in the same second language.

Students may exempt one or more of the beginning courses. In any case a minimum of 18 hours is necessary to complete any minor.

Therefore, students beginning beyond the 101 level due to previous language experience are required to take additional electives chosen from any of the courses offered in the language except 210, Literature in Translation, to reach a total of 18 hours.

The courses required for the minor by the department are listed in the Slippery Rock University catalog as are the requirements for the major. The B.S. programs require 27-45 hours; the B.A. programs require 24-42 hours. The only course in the department which cannot count for the major or the minor is 210.

FRENCH MINOR:

• Language and Culture 102, 103 (6 hours)

• Communicating in French 201 (3 hours)

• Reading in French 220 (3 hours)

• 2 courses at the 300 or 400 level (6 hours)

For a total of 18 hours

GERMAN MINOR

• Language and Culture 102, 103 (6 hours)

• Communicating in German 201 (3 hours)

• Reading in German 220 (3 hours)

• 2 courses at the 300 or 400 level (6 hours)

For a total of 18 hours

RUSSIAN MINOR:

• Language and Culture 101, 102, 103 (9 hours)

• Intermediate Russian I 202 (3 hours)

• Russian Civilization 305 (3 hours)

• 20th Century Russian Legacy 306 ((3 hours)

For a total of 18 hours

SPANISH MINOR:

• Language and Culture 102, 103  (6 hours)

• Intermediate Spanish Grammar 200 (3 hours)

• Communicating in Spanish 201 OR

• Reading in Spanish 220  (3 hours)

• 2 courses at the 300 or 400 level  (6 hours)

For a total of 18 hours

Native speaker minor: Native speakers choosing to minor in Spanish shall complete 18 hours of course work at the 300 and 400 level in accordance with the guidelines outlined for the native speaker major.

SPANISH/ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MINOR

• Spanish 101, 102, 103

• Spanish 200, 201
  
  Three of the following four courses:

• Spanish 302, 309, 318 or ELEC 325

   

Native speaker elementary education minor: Spanish 302, 309, ElEc 325, and three electives at the 300-level in accordance with the guidelines outlined for the native speaker major.

In addition, the department recommends to certain groups of students the following:

Business students seeking the minor in a second language may wish to consider the following courses:

• Language 101, 102, 103

• Language 200, 201

• Language 303

Language (at least one of the following) 300, 301 (French, Spanish), a civilization course, 340 (Spanish), 400, 401 (Spanish).

Students in social service areas, such as allied health, nursing, recreation, and social welfare who choose to minor in Spanish may wish to consider the following courses:

• Spanish 101, 102, 103

• Spanish 200, 201

• Spanish 301, 307

• Spanish 401
