» SRU Plans 'Center for Disability and Health' Funded by $161,000 Federal Grant
 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Building on its national reputation for adapted physical activity, Slippery Rock University will use a $161,000 federal grant to open the “Center on Disability and Health.” The resource center will help people with disabilities develop healthy lifestyles through education and daily workouts.

» SRU Emphasizes 'Black History Month' with Lectures, Displays, Performances
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will host nearly two dozen special events as part of its monthlong “Black History Celebration,” including a high school jazz festival, performances and lectures by an African Griot, a master enthnomusicologist in percussion and a performance on the history of black women. In addition on-going displays noting black achievements will be offered.

» SRU Professor's Program Intended to Boost Home Ownership, Improvements
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A plan that will boost community home ownership and aid in home improvements drafted by Slippery Rock University government and public affairs professor Dr. Mark Daniels has received the go ahead with a $219,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

» SRU's Bailey Library Series to Detail Integration of National Football League
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – “Encounters: Bailey Library’s Authors and Artists Series” will present Dr. Alan Levy, SRU history professor and author of “Tackling Jim Crow: Racial Segregation and Professional Football” at a 3 p.m. lecture Feb. 23. The public is invited.

» Debate on Pornography Set for SRU Feb. 4
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Is pornography healthy or is it denigrating to women? The topic will be debated in depth when Ron Jeremy, a nationally recognized pornography star with 1,800 adult films to his credit, and Susan Cole, author playwright and senior entertainment and book editor at NOW Magazine, meet at Slippery Rock University on Feb. 4.

» 'Requiem for Mr. Rogers' World Premiere to Feature SRU Choir, Orchestra
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s orchestra and choir have been given the honor of performing the world premiere of “In Memoriam: A Requiem for Mr. Rogers.” Ninety students, along with  former cast members of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” will debut the Fred Rogers tribute composition  7 p.m. Feb. 29 at historic St. Justin Church in Mount Washington. The public is invited.

» 'Rev. King Day of Service' Set at SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will observe the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday Jan. 19 with a day of activities, including a candlelight vigil, service projects and an evening address titled “Shattered Dreams” by Leon Williams, director of intercultural programs at Buena Vista University. The public is invited to the vigil and     7 p.m. lecture honoring the slain civil rights leader.

» Dance Concert 'Visual Proof' Features National Choreographers
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s dance department’s annual winter concert titled “Visual Proof” will be staged at 8 p.m. Jan. 28-31 featuring works created by guest artist Helanius Wilkins, faculty and students featuring dance diversity ranging from jazz, tap and modern to contemporary ballet.

» Master Percussionist to Perform at SRU
  SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Master percussionist Dr. Hafiz Shabazz, a veteran performer and professor of nonwestern music at Dartmouth College, will perform 8 p.m. Feb. 16 in Slippery Rock University’s Swope Music Hall. There is no charge, and the public is invited.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Due to unforeseen circumstances, SRU’s planned address by Pennsylvania State Sen. Mary Jo White, part of the on-going Women in Leadership Series, set for 12:30 p.m. Thursday [Jan. 15], has been canceled.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University has inducted 21 special education majors and minors into Sigma Pi Epsilon Delta, the national honorary fraternity, in recognition of their academics and coursework in the program.  

» SRU Dance Department Plans Saturday Lessons for Children
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The dance department at Slippery Rock University opens an 11-week “Saturday Dance Program for Children” Jan. 31. The program, focused on teaching, exploring and learning, is open to those ages 3 through 12 and will be held in the McKay Education Building Dance Studio.

» SRU Receives $250,000 Gift to Develop Equestrian Center on Campus
 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Philanthropist Mrs. Ethel Carruth of Houston, Texas, has continued her support of Slippery Rock University by giving $250,000 to develop a 20-acre equestrian center on campus, providing a merge point for studies in equine therapy, biology, agriculture, green building design, farming and the environment.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- While most sports fans know the story of Jackie Robinson and the integration of Major League Baseball, few know the sequence of events leading to the integration of professional football. Slippery Rock University history professor Dr. Alan Levy is helping to change that with his latest book "Tackling Jim Crow: Racial Segregation in Professional Football."

» Spanish Tuna Group to Perform Century-Old Music Tradition at SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  A multi-award-winning Tuna musical group from the Law School of one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Spain, the Universidad de Valladolid, will carry on a century-old Spanish tradition when they perform traditional folk music at 4 p.m. Jan. 16 in Slippery Rock University’s Carruth Rizza Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Slippery Rock University will observe Monday’s [Jan. 19] holiday with its first “Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service” program. The daylong program will offer outstanding photo and interview opportunities. (The university is open Monday, but there are no classes.)

» SRU One of Two Sites in Nation Selected for ACHA Health Center Assessment
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The American College Health Association has awarded Slippery Rock University’s McLachlan Student Health Center one of two national needs assessment grants which are being used to conduct a review of the center’s operation related to building and strengthening capacity to prevent HIV infection and outline other important health problems among youth.
