A quick reminder for those planning Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day celebration coverage:

Slippery Rock University will observe Monday’s [Jan. 19] holiday with its first “Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service” program. The daylong program will offer outstanding photo and interview opportunities. (The university is open Monday, but there are no classes.)

The day’s schedule is as follows.

•      Students will participate in the Butler Unity Day sponsored Breakfast at the Butler YWCA with Michael Matambanadzo, assistant professor of history at SRU, as scheduled speaker. The Butler Unity Project is an organization created to promote interracial understanding and combat racism in Butler and surrounding communities.

•      10:30 a.m. “King Day of Service Kickoff Program,” University Union: Interim President Smith, Slippery Rock Mayor Ken Harris; traditional Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Speech Competition.

•      Opening program followed with assembly line production of “Care Bags” for elderly living in nursing homes.

•      11:30 a.m., Rev. King Day of Service Volunteers Lunch

•      After lunch: Student teams will deliver “Care Bags” assembled above to five regional nursing home facilities and meet with residents.

•      5 p.m. reception in Russell Wright Alumni House for evening program guest speaker Leon Williams, director of intercultural programs at Buena Vista University.

•      6 p.m. candlelight vigil assemblage at Carruth Rizza Hall for walk along Main Street and Keister Road ending at the University Union for Mr. Williams address titled “Shattered Dreams” and including Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Presentation of first Civil Leadership Awards.
