Philosophy and European Identity
European philosophers have been asking the question of what it means to be European, and this issue becomes thematic in the late 19th century and continues into the 21st century. The course will investigate this changing sense of what it means to be European. We will pursue this issue by examining Friedrich Nietzsche's reflections on nihilism along with Edmund Husserl's issue into the crisis regarding the European sciences. From there, we will develop Martin Heidegger's idea of the end of philosophy, look into Jean-Paul Sartes's and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's issues regarding Marxism, and then examine the modern/postmodern debate surrounding this issue
