Essential Information on Pennsylvania Licensure

Qualifications for the Pennsylvania LPC:

1.  Be of good moral character.

2.  Meet ONE of the following education requirements (transcript required) as per Section 7 (f) (2) Act 136 - 1998 (on website www.dos.state.pa.us - click on "professional licensure," then click on "regulations," then click on "Chapter 49") and Board Regulation at 49 PA Code, Chapter 49:
      a. Within five years after final regulations, has completed a planned program of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of graduate coursework in counseling or a field closely related to the practice of professional counseling, including a mater's degree in counseling or a field determined by the board of regulation to be closely related to the practice of professional counseling, from an accedited educational institution.
     b. Has successfully completed a planned program of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of graduate coursework in counseling or a field determined by the board by regulation to be closely related to the practice of professional counseling, including a 48-semester-hour or 72-quarter-hour master's degree in counseling or a field determined by the board by regulation to be closely related to the practice of professional counseling, from an accredited educational institution.
     c. Holds a doctoral degree in counseling from an accredited educational institution or holds a doctoral degree in a field determined by the board by regulation to be closely related to the practice of professional counseling from an accredited educational institution.

3.  Demonstrate proof of supervised professional counseling practice experience as per Section 7 (f) (3) Act 136 and Section 49.13 (4) of the PA Board's rules and regulations.

4.  Licensure Examination - as per Section 49.11  Rules and Regulation, one of the following is required:
