Engl 598: Selected Topics

A variety of special topic courses will be offered as interest and demand arises.  Offerings in the past have included: Caribbean Literature, Creative Writing (Poetry), Creative Writing (Non-Fiction), and Postmodern Fiction. Students may take up to 6 semester hours of Selected Topics courses. (3 semester hours)

Engl 601: Research in the Discipline

Examines the backgrounds and techniques of scholarship in English studies. Introduction to the scope ofthe discipline, methods of research, and professional discourse as they reflect current interpretive issues. Includes the preparation of an annotated bibliography and paper. (3 semerster hours) 

Engl 602: Introduction to Rhetoric

This course outlines the history of rhetoric ("the art of persuasion") from the classical period to the present. It examines the revival and transformation of rhetoric in the twentieth century, both as a mediumof peaceful cooperation and as a pedgogy for teaching writing. Prerequisite: Graduate standing or consent of instructor. (3 semester hours)

Engl 603: Literary Criticism

The study of literary criticism and aethetic theory. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 607: English Literature: Renaissance

A study of English literature from 1485-1660 focusing on, but not limited to, such writers as More, Sidney, Spencer, Marlowe, Hooker, Donne, Jonson, Herrick, Herbert, Marvell, and Milton. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 608: English Literature: 18th Century

A survey of English literature focusing on major figures from the Renaissance through the 18th Century. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 609: English Literature: 19th Century

A survey of literary texts of the 19th Century. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 617: American Literature: Origin to 1865

A thorough study of early American literature and the Transcendentalists through Whitman. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 618: American Literature: 1865 to 1945

A study of major and minor American writers and movements from 1865 to 1945. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 619: American Literature: 1945 to Present

A survey of American literature from 1945 to the present.  (3 semester hours) 

Engl 620: Linguistics

An introduction to the theories and application of linguistic studies. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 621: The Teaching of Writing and Literature

This course extends into practice the theoretical considerations of English 602 and 603. Students will study and practice techniques for teaching writing and literature. Prerequisites: Graduate standing, Engl 602 and 603 or consent of instructor. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 651: Seminar in Shakespeare

An intensive reading of Shakespeare. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 652: Seminar in the Literature of Pluralism

This course the opportunity for an in-depth and focused study of minority literature (i.e. Native, Black, Aged, Women, Diabled, Hispanic, and Asian American). It will examine a specific body of writing, showing its relationship to the larger construct of American literature, and will investigate rhetoric from a specific point of view. Prerequisite: Graduate standing or consent of instructor. (3 semester  hours)

Critical analysis of works from various countries and cultures. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 654: Seminar in Professional Writing

An in-depth study of how writing is used in various professions.  (3 semester hours) 

Engl 655: Administrative, Scientific, and Technical Writing

Will instruct students in the theory, skills, and practice necessary to successful administrative, scientific, and technical writing. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 656: Seminar in Visual Rhetoric

Will instruct students in the theory and practice of visual rhetoric in technical design and familiarize them with the growing body of empirical research into how visual persuasiveness is achieved in professional documents. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 657: Seminar in Advertising and Public Relations Writing

Will instruct students in the theory and practice of advertising and public relations writing in the context of expanding global and electronic advertising markets and increasingly complex communication. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 658: Seminar in Grant and Proposal Writing

Will instruct students in the goals, audiences, sources, methods, processes, and formats requisite for successful grant and proposal writing. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 660: Seminar in Creative Writing

Provides students with the opportunity to develop their abilities in writing poety, fiction, or dramatic writing (stage or screen). While the student will be expected to become knowledgeable about the techniques of each genre, the major writing project for each student will focus on one genre. Thus, while providing a wide range of options for the advanced student, the course provides depth and focus in one selected genre. This course may be repeated for up to six semester hours. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 688: Stratford: Classic Stage

Offered during the summer, this class is the intensive study of five or six classic plays and includes the attendance of performances at the Stratford Theatre in Ontario, Canda. Travel fees required. (3 semester hours) 

Engl 689: Stratford: Shakespeare Stage

Offered during the summer, this class is the intensive study of selected Shakespeare plays and includes the attendance of performances at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada. Travel fees required. (3 semester hours)
