I. Purpose 

To establish a policy for recognizing important events in employees' lives in an effort to foster better employee relations. 

II. Objectives 
A. To outline a procedure for Human Resources to send greeting cards to acknowledge important events 
in employees' lives.
B. To provide criteria for determining when cards should be sent.
C. To enhance morale.

III. Policy 

Two greeting cards will be utilized. One reads "Thinking of You" and will be used as a sympathy or get-well card. The other reads "Congratulations" and will be used for weddings, births, adoptions and retirements. 

Greeting cards will be sent as soon as information is made available and will go to employees in the following circumstances: 

1. The death of the employee's spouse, parent, sibling or child.
2. An employee's illness or accident requiring the use of two weeks or more of any of the following:
sick leave, disability leave, or leave without pay for illness.
3. The birth or adoption of a child.
4. An employee's marriage.
5. An employee's retirement from the university.

Human Resources will closely monitor employee leave and benefit records to determine when greeting cards are appropriate.
