SRU TRUSTEES TALLY A NEAR-RECORD STUDENT
ENROLLMENT
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University’s Council of Trustees
gathered for its regular quarterly meeting today and reviewed
enrollment statistics showing a near record number of students.
While the official enrollment number is not tallied until the
15th day of classes (Sept. 21), today’s count
showed 7,923, just two shy of the 7,925 headcount in fall 1991, the
highest in the history of the university.
In
his report to the trustees, SRU President Robert Smith said,
“This is a great time to be at Slippery Rock
University.” He told them that faculty are committed to
raising the value of an SRU degree by “increasing academic
rigor in the classroom, integrating the classroom with experiential
learning and engaging our students in individualized intellectual
experiences all to create competent, caring, capable
citizens.”
After
listing a number of last year’s graduates who went on to
prestigious graduate programs, he said “Acceptance at these
institutions is testimony to the quality of the SRU degree and the
willingness to meet our highest standards of academic
rigor.”
Smith
also reviewed a summer of intense construction activity on campus.
“Work started on the new Science and Technology Building, a
new pedestrian corridor is nearing completion, a new women’s
athletic facility was constructed, 24 classrooms and one auditorium
were renovated, and new computer labs were
installed.”
Council action
Trustees approved the 2004-05 budget request of $85.2
million, which will be submitted to the Pennsylvania State System
of Higher Education Board of Governors. They also reviewed
contracts, fixed assets, and service and supply purchase
orders.
Trustee
reviewed and approved the Student Code of Conduct, which was
updated to reflect changes in the law. The code of conduct presents
a comprehensive outline of the judicial process for student
discipline and defines students’ rights and
responsibilities. They also approved increasing the parking
fee from $10 to $25 with a $10 summer parking fee for students who
do not already have an annual parking permit.
