On June 22, 2004 a representative from the Polar
corporation provided a 6-hour professional development training
session for the faculty within the physical education
department. This training session included hands on
experiences in using both hardware and software products that are
being currently used across the country in public schools for both
formative and summative assessments. The hardware presented
included downloadable heart rate monitors and hand held pocket
computers. The software presented included E series software
used in preparing post physical activity assessments from heart
rate monitor’s, PE Manager software used in conjunction with
hand held which allows the physical educator to assess through
rubrics, heart rate, attendance, social responsibility and
cognitive knowledge all while in a physical activity setting.
The final software product included TriFit software, which also
works in conjunction with hand held and allows physical educator to
perform physical fitness assessments and document all scores on
hand held.
The physical education department was awarded a technology
grant from the State System of Higher Education in 2003 for the
purpose of purchasing all of the above-mentioned hardware and
software. This training session provided the PESM faculty
education and training to assure proper delivery to current and
future physical education teacher education majors.
