 Dr. James "Gym" McFarland Award 

 

SPOTLIGHT

Dr. McFarland served Slippery Rock University from 1974-2001 as a Professor of Parks and Recreation, men's and women's tennis coach and as Campus Recreation's first Intramural Sports coordinator. In 2003 'Gym" was inducted into the Rock's Athletic Hall of Fame.

"Gym" served as a mentor to many of the original members of Slippery Rock University’s Campus Recreation team. His wit and wisdom helped to guide the development of campus recreation and the ARC as it opening 2000. "Gym's" competitive spirit and zest for life, combined with his recreation background, made him not only a successful teacher and coach, but a friend to all. We appreciate all "Gym" did for us and THE ROCK!  He is greatly missed.

In his honor, the Dr. James “Gym” McFarland Award was initiated during the 2006-2007 academic year.  Annually the award is presented to the years outstanding Campus Recreation Student Employee.  The qualifications for this award are:

A.  Current Campus Recreation student employee who has been employed for a minimum of two semesters.
B. 
Current or previous Campus Recreation All Star.
C. 
Participation in Campus Recreation activities.
D.  Minimum GPA of 2.8.
E. 
Best exhibits the characteristics of leadership, participation, enthusiasm and teamwork reflective of Dr. McFarland

The recipient of this annual award will receive a check for $400.00.  If interested in making a donation to this award, please contact Greg Sferra, Campus Recreation Director at gregory.sferra@sru.edu or (724) 738-4525. 

The applicaiton process is as follows:
1.   
Submit a completed application, resume and supporting letter by the first Friday of each April.
2.   The supporting letter must address the following items:
      a.   
Explain why you believe you deserve this award based upon the qualifications emphasizing the characteristics reflected by Dr. McFarland;  leadership, participation, enthusiasm and teamwork 
       b.   Clarify how your involvement with Campus Recreation improved your leadership, participation, enthusiasm and teamwork. 
       c.  
Site specific examples of your leadership, participation, enthusiasm and teamwork experiences in Campus Recreation, on the SRU Campus and in the community.
3.   Submit the information to Greg Sferra electronically  (

C. The winner will be announced at the Senior Send Off.

Play is prohibited at the MAC (McFarland Recreational Sports Complex) when the RED FLAG is flying. The MAC will be closed from December 1-March 1.
