SRU’s Office of Communication and Public Affairs wins 10 national Collegiate Advertising Awards

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Office of University Communication and Public Affairs staff has captured 10 Gold, Silver and Bronze 2016 Collegiate Advertising Awards.

Sandy Busch, graphic communication director in the CPA office, was the big winner, taking home a pair of Gold Awards, one for the "Holocaust Remembrance" event poster, and one for a human resources print ad; and a pair of Silver Awards for the spring edition of The ROCK magazine; and one in partnership with Tyler Sing, a senior art major from Pittsburgh, for the "History of ..." poster series.

Jon Holtz, athletic communication director, secured two Gold Awards for his Rock Football game day programs in the categories of "Publication External - Series" and "Sports Specific." A third Gold Award went to Holtz in the "Internet Advertising - Single" category for "Game On," a digital billboard used on the University's official website, www.sru.edu.

Another Gold Award was awarded to Jamie Mulac, a senior art major and student designer from Indiana, for the SRU Foundation's "Sunset Serenade" package (Special Events).

Chenoa Gregory, a senior art major and student designer from Freeport, won a pair of Silver Awards for "Desserts & Dogs" (Publication Internal - Single) and a logo for SRU's Performing Arts Series (Logos/Trademarks/Mascots).

"The variety of awards and the number of individuals receiving them speaks volumes to the depth of talent in the department. This award competition pits internal staff projects against professional design agencies, and students and staff against agency designers. I am extremely proud of the recognition of staff has received, but more importantly, their commitment to finding new ways to tell the SRU story and to promote all of the outstanding offerings at the University," said Rita Abent, executive director for communication and public affairs.

The Collegiate Advertising Awards is an elite national program seeking to recognize today's most talented marketing professionals for outstanding excellence in communications, marketing, advertising and promotions of their schools.

The 2016 CAA program had more than 900 entries from the U.S. and Canada representing community colleges and universities.

Awards were issued for entries that received top marks from judges placing them in the top 16 percent of the nation for advertising excellence. Judging criteria included creativity, layout and design, functionality, message effectiveness, production quality and overall appeal. Participant's entries competed against similar-sized organizations in their specific groups and categories.

These latest accolades bring the number of awards won by SRU University Communication and Public Affairs staff this year to 20, including those previously announced by CUPRAP.
