SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University has been named as one of the five best colleges for special education majors in Pennsylvania by career website, Zippia.com.

The only school from western Pennsylvania to make the list, SRU placed second on Zippia’s rankings, which also included Millersville University, Bloomsburg University, Penn State University’s main campus and York College.

Zippia based its rankings on which programs offer the best career opportunities for its special education majors. The website created a “Special Education Quality Index” using data from the National Center for Education Statistics and the College Scorecard from ED.gov to evaluate institutions on criteria that included: career results, mean earnings (after six and 10 years), employment ratios, percentages of graduates who are special education majors, school performance, admissions rate, graduation rate, cost of attendance and student debt.

SRU offers three undergraduate programs in special education – early childhood/special education, early childhood/special education international and special education transition programming – and a variety of graduate degrees, endorsements and certifications in special education, autism spectrum disorders and special education supervision and leadership.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of special education professionals is expected to grow by 6 percent between 2014 and 2024.
