Snow maps Rhode Island hiking trails

Julie Snow, Slippery Rock University professor of geography, geology and the environment, has teamed with author Jeanine Silversmith on a new book, "The Rhode Island Family Guide and Journal."

Snow, a Rhode Island native, drafted all the hiking trail maps in the book. She and Silversmith hiked each of the 43 trails to collect digital spatial data and used satellite imagery to confirm their mappings.

The 200-page book provides guidelines for family hikes and nature enjoyment.

"We wrote the book to get children and families more engaged with nature, which has been shown to create healthy development in children as well as improve the physical, mental and emotional health of both children and adults," Snow said.
