A student's rights with respect to their educational records are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). The FERPA policy and a description of "directory information" can be found in the university catalog under "Academic Policies".

SRU Definition of Student Location
The difference between “location” and “residence” plays an important role in Slippery Rock University (SRU) maintaining compliance with a number of regulations. “Location” is where a student is physically situated while participating in a University activity. “Residence” applies to the state where a student votes and/or holds a driver’s license.
At SRU student location is initially determined by the information provided by the student at the time of enrollment. Student location can be changed through a number of University procedures/processes:
- change of address request submitted by the student to Academic Records
- information update on the home tab of “My SRU”
- online field experience application which is under construction
- respond to the request for location information sent each semester to student identified as being distance education students, which asks them to voluntarily self-report their location.

State Authorization
Slippery Rock University (SRU) operates under the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), which enables SRU students to complete field experiences in the 49 other member states as well as allow SRU to enroll residents from member states in distance education programs. California (CA) does not participate in SARA, however, the state does not regulate public institutions, so SRU students are able to complete field experiences there and SRU can enroll CA residents in distance education programs. Due to Colorado regulations, only paid field experiences are permitted. New Hampshire now requires sites offering experiential learning activities, where a student is working for practical experience and is not being paid or is being paid at a sub-minimum rate, be approved by the New Hampshire Labor Commissioner. Additionally, the student's program will also need to be approved by the NH Department of Labor. For more information on state authorization, please visit the State Authorization web page.

Refund Policy and Requirements for Returning Title IV funds
Students who withdraw from the university may be entitled to a refund of charges. Also, recipients of federal financial aid who withdraw from the university may be required to have a portion of their aid returned to the federal financial aid programs. Requirements for Returning Federal (Title IV) Aid are available. The Office of Student Accounts has refund related information and can be reached by phone at 724.738.2088 for additional information.
Requirements and Procedures for Withdrawing from the University
Students electing to withdraw from the university can do so through an e-withdrawal process form which is located in the MySRU portal under ACADEMICS>ACADEMIC SUPPORT TOOLS>WITHDRAW FROM SRU. Only standard withdrawals may be completed through this form. For medical-related withdrawals, students should contact the Office of Student Support at 724.738.2121.
