Programs

SRU's Art Department attracts a diverse population from throughout the world. The stimulating atmosphere of the Art Department and small class sizes provide the best possible student-to-professor relationships. Instruction is individualized to meet each student's needs and interests. Advanced students attend a weekly conference with one of the art professors. In these sessions, students are encouraged to discuss and explore new ideas in depth.

The Art Department at SRU has an excellent and dedicated faculty. Members hold advanced degrees from prestigious institutions across the nation, and they maintain active exhibition and scholarly careers.

Bachelor of Fine Arts

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program is for students interested in art and art-related professions. It is an intensive program of study aimed at developing a foundation of attitudes, traits, and abilities with which to begin a lifetime as an artist. Emphasis is placed on students' personal experiences as the source of artistic motivation. The broad based Bachelor of Arts program provides students with a diversified background in Art suitable to all manners of general applications and an excellent foundation for further study in various disciplines. Bachelor of Fine Arts: Ceramics

The BFA in Art with a Concentration in Ceramics is designed for students interested in developing technical skills and creative expression with ceramic materials and related processes. Students will have opportunities to experience both functional and sculptural approaches alongside a range of design and firing techniques. Individual creative development is emphasized at advanced levels, as well as continuous exploration of traditional and contemporary possibilities; this includes incorporation of additional art mediums and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Digital Media

Slippery Rock University's BFA in Art with a Digital Media concentration offers a bachelor's degree for students interested in digitally creating videos, 3D models, animation, and more. Through our creative curriculum, students will have opportunities to explore various digital-focused approaches for two-dimensional image production and composition and three-dimensional considerations including possibilities for 3D modeling and animation, 3D printing, and image/projection, and video and animation.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Drawing

The BFA in Art with a Concentration in Drawing encourages interdisciplinary approaches to both traditional and experimental drawing materials. Experienced faculty members give a variety of assignments to help improve technical skills, visual perception, and conceptual considerations. Innovation and creative explorations are encouraged to produce diverse perspectives and approaches.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Fiber Art

The BFA in Art with Concentration in Fiber Art is designed for students interested in exploring traditional and experimental flexible materials and related techniques (textile dyeing, surface design, book arts, papermaking, felting and more). This interdisciplinary program gives an opportunity for developing a portfolio of a wide range of artworks where creativity and material are in focus.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Graphic Design

The Bachelor of Fine Arts: Concentration in Graphic Design is an attractive choice for talented and creative artists seeking a career in the field of graphic design. Utilizing varied methods of production, from digital tools to hand-based production, students work with text and image to create work that inspires, informs and captivates targeted audiences. Within this program you will develop a unique and diverse portfolio to enter the design industry.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Metalsmithing

The BFA in Art with a Concentration in Metalsmithing is designed for students interested in developing technical skills and creative expression within the histories and traditions of Jewelry and Adornment, Functional Metalwork, and Fine Metal Sculpture. Students will have opportunities to develop technical proficiency in the manipulation of a variety of materials, predominantly metal, through the exploration of a wide variety of techniques. Individual creative development is emphasized at advanced levels, as well as continuous exploration of traditional and contemporary possibilities; this includes incorporation of additional art mediums and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Painting

The Bachelor of Fine Art with Concentration in Painting explores contemporary painting studio practices for preparation of a lifelong pursuit in the studio art of painting. The program begins with learning basic studio techniques and art history through both traditional and current standards, media and processes. The intermediate level approaches gaining independence with artistic aesthetics and personal style, while continuing to learn and build upon traditional drawing, figure and spatial concepts in color and design. The senior level provides a focused direction in building a unique portfolio for professional endeavors in painting related careers, culminating with a professional gallery exhibition.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Photography

The BFA in Art with Concentration in Photography provides students with both digital and analog opportunities to explore various genres of photography. Each semester, fine art photography will be underscored while also learning about a different photographic branch such as: Portrait, Product, Fashion, Narrative, Public art, or Documentary/Photojournalism. Importance will be placed upon individual expression and portfolio development.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Printmaking

The BFA in Art with Concentration in Printmaking is designed for students interested in exploring traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques. The advanced levels consolidate knowledge and encourage experimentation. The program fosters development of one's individual artistic voice, vision and and excellence, resulting in the production of a strong portfolio.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Psychology (Pre-Art Therapy)

The Bachelor of Fine Arts: Concentration in Psychology (Pre-Art Therapy) is a program that prepares students for graduate studies in Art Therapy. The program offers a broad range of art studios where students can develop skills and learn a variety of techniques necessary for their future career. The Psychology courses included in the Concentration help prepare students for further study and development at the graduate level.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Sculpture

The goals of this program are to execute sculptural works while sharpening technical skills, strengthening critical analysis and problem solving and to provide historical context in the medium. Through hands on production of imagery and written analysis students can gain greater insights into the mechanics of artmaking.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Teacher Preparation

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with K-12 Art Teacher Preparation is for students interested in teaching art at the K-12 level. Built upon the BFA Degree, this is an intensive program of study aimed at developing a foundation of attitudes, traits, and abilities with which to begin a lifetime as an artist and teacher. Emphasis is placed on students' personal experiences as the source of artistic motivation. The broadly based liberal studies curriculum, in concert with professional training in the visual arts and in education, should lead to successful careers for artists who want to share their passion for art with others. The BFA, plus six additional certification-related courses taken concurrently, can be completed in eight semesters. Graduates will have one semester of student teaching, and will obtain certification, through Carlow University.

Minor in Art for Elementary Education Majors

This minor is designed to provide elementary education majors at SRU with the option of a specialization in art with an emphasis on translating studio experiences into the elementary classroom. The minor provides the student with an overview of and orientation to studio experience that will serve as the framework from which to teach art to elementary students. Learn more here.

The Minor in General Art provides students with an opportunity to expand upon their Slippery Rock academic experience through the addition of a visually creative and expressive field of study. Numerous students focusing their academic energies in other areas of study have found that the Minor in General Art can provide broadened avenues of exploration and greater nuance to the skills and abilities attained through their focused Major. Minor in Art - Graphic Design Track for Communication Majors

The Graphic Design Track is the Art Minor designed especially for Communication majors, provides a skills- and concept-based course track to complement Communication majors' developing skills and knowledge, within their own academic domain, with specific studio art courses taught by the Art Department. This minor will provide a solid background to support an interest in communication and informational graphic design. In this minor, students will focus on ways to give visual form to ideas and concepts, and to bring order and clarity to information. They will become skilled in the software used by graphic designers: page layout, image creation, image manipulation, and motion-based software programs. The primary emphasis on the artistic development of concepts in the minor track will allow Communication majors an opportunity to enhance their potential career choices in occupations where artistic as well as technical, graphic design capabilities are valued. Minor in Art History

The minor in Art History will provide the student with an introduction to the art of the western and non-western world. In addition to the two introductory courses Overview of World Art and Overview of Western Art, the student will take four upper-level courses chosen from a variety of topics. Minor in Communication - Graphic Design Track for Art Majors

The Graphic Design Track in the Communication Minor, designed especially for Art majors, provides a primarily skills-based course track to complement Art majors' developing skills and knowledge, within their own academic domain, with specific design and production courses taught by the Communication Department. Additionally, requiring Art majors in the Graphic Design track of the Communication Minor to take both Communication Concepts (13-110) and Communication Law (13-410) will provide intellectual and theoretical enrichment. The primary emphasis on graphic design skills in the minor track, as well as the two theoretical courses, will therefore allow Art majors an opportunity to enhance their potential career choices in occupations where artistic and more technical, graphic design capabilities are valued. Minor in Nonprofit Management in Art

The Nonprofit Management in Art Minor for Art Majors is designed to introduce the work environment of nonprofit organizations such as art centers, galleries, museums and more. Emphasis is placed on learning the management and outreach side of nonprofit organizations. Paired up with the art major, it prepares our students for a rewarding career in the nonprofit sector.
