The Community Corrections concentration was developed to give interested Criminology and Criminal Justice students an opportunity to develop specific knowledge and skills in the area of community corrections. Criminology students will take classes in the Psychology and Social Work department to complete this interdisciplinary concentration. 

Why Choose the Community Corrections Concentration?

Due in large part to the massive prison overcrowding of the past several decades and the costs that have accompanied this growth, the importance of community corrections has risen drastically. Community corrections are now commonly utilized as alternatives to incarceration and it involves rehabilitation and supervision strategies within our communities. Consequently, there is a need for qualified personnel in this field and the community correction specialization prepares Criminology and Criminal Justice graduates for this type of work.

What Will You Learn?

With this concentration, Criminology and Criminal Justice majors will enhance their knowledge in community corrections, which are sanctions imposed on convicted adults or adjudicated juveniles that occur in a residential or community setting outside of jail or prison and include, among other options, probation, parole, halfway houses, and treatment centers. 

Careers In Criminology and Criminal Justice

With this concentration, within the Criminology and Criminal Justice degree, students can pursue any number of traditional criminal justice jobs and will be better prepared for career paths in community corrections.
