Minor in Middle School Math
Offered by: MathematicsIf you're a prospective teacher of grades 4-8, the minor in Middle School Mathematics is designed to give you a deeper and more expansive understanding of math. Increasing your knowledge of different mathematical areas gives you a flexible and creative approach in teaching. You'll also be better equipped to meet the needs of students who have a wide range of math interests and skills.

SRU's minor in Middle School Mathematics does not result in teaching certification, but is intended as a valuable supplement for SRU students in majors that do lead to certification, including Special Education, Music Education, Physical Education, and Elementary Education. It is a particularly useful addition to a major in Mid-Level Science, Language Arts, or Social Studies Education, and those seeking secondary certification to teach mathematics in grades 7-12. Completing a minor in math also helps you to expand your critical thinking skills and showcases you as someone who is willing to tackle tough problems.
What Will You Learn?
You'll complete a sequence in mathematics for grade K-6 environments, elementary geometry, and a methods course on teaching mathematics in middle school. You'll also have the opportunity to choose from courses such as:
