Theatre BA: Acting

As an SRU Acting major, you'll receive top-flight, pre-professional training in contemporary actor training methods. Our talented, experienced faculty includes working playwrights, directors, and actors. You'll be learning from professionals in the industry who are passionate about education. At SRU you'll have the opportunity to participate in productions both locally and internationally, and will receive a well-rounded education with real-world skills that will help you establish a professional career. If you're interested in Theatre Performance or Musical Theatre, SRU is excited to also offer a new Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in these two concentrations.

What Will You Learn?

Through the Acting emphasis at SRU you'll first gain a solid foundation in the Stanislavski method, and then progress to advanced courses in acting, voice, and movement. Core upper division acting courses include:

  • Acting II (centered around the techniques of Uta Hagen) 
  • Voice for the Actor 
  • Movement for the Actor (centered around the techniques of Michael Chekhov) 
  • Acting Shakespeare 

Acting majors can also take up to three sections of Acting Technique - a course focusing on specialized topics, such as:

  • Auditioning 
  • Stage Combat 
  • Devised Theatre 
  • Comedy 
  • Acting Classic Drama 
  • Theatre for Social Justice 

As an Acting major at SRU, you'll also have the chance to regularly audition for mainstage and student productions, offering you the opportunity to graduate with significant production experience and an extensive resumé. You can also enhance your education through participation in the national college theatre festival, KCACTF.

Additionally, you can add a professional production to your credits by traveling to the Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the SRU Theatre Department has toured six productions since 2006!
