Art

All of the scholarships listed below have one scholarship application. The art scholarship will open December 1st and the deadline is February 5th. If you have questions, contact the Art Department, Art Building I, 724.738.2020. This scholarship is currently closed.

J. Robert Bruya Scholarship

The student must be in his or her junior or senior year. The selection will be made based on the merits of the student's portfolio.

Michael Changnon Scholarship

Scholarship for students concentrating in photography. Student must show promise and exhibit creative potential.

Alison Como Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship for BFA sophomore/juniors with a 2.75 GPA and based on the merits of their portfolio.

Dr. Jayne E. Craig Scholarship

Scholarship for art students traveling to Europe. Must be a junior or senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

John and Martha Gault Art Scholarship

Scholarship for art majors studying art education who have at least a 2.75 QPA. Must demonstrate financial need.

Charles B. Hamilton Memorial Art Scholarship

Scholarship for a sophomore or junior art student with emphasis on painting (2 awarded).

Bob Simile Scholarship

Scholarship is open to all art majors.

Craig Succop Scholarship

Scholarship is available to all art majors, including new and transfer students with an emphasis on metalsmithing.

Elaine B. Taylor Scholarship

Scholarship for an Art-Education major who is a non-traditional student with demonstrated financial need. Applicant must have successfully completed 85 credit hours and be admitted to the K-12 Teacher Certification Program.

Wukich Family Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to art students based on the merits of their portfolio.

Criminology and Criminal Justice

Capt. Jim Unterwagner Scholarship

Full-time Criminology & Criminal Justice, Social Work, or Interdisciplinary with Sociology or Anthropology emphasis who will have completed 64 credits by the end of the spring semester and demonstrates both financial need and academic achievements. On the electronic application, students will need to attach a resume and an essay describing why they should be considered and how this award would assist them in reaching academic and/or professional goals. The application will open November 15th, and the deadline is March 15th. The Capt. Jim Unterwagner Scholarship Application is currently closed.

The application for the following scholarships opens November 24th and closes March 1st. The deadline has been EXTENDED to March 8th. Students must be enrolled in the upcoming fall semester to be eligible for this scholarship. The Criminology and Criminal Justice Scholarship Application is currently closed. Commander Gwen J. Elliott Scholarship

A student majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Slippery Rock University who most closely exemplifies the ideals of Commander Elliott. Student must have proven academic excellence, appropriate activities in the discipline, and service to the community or university.

Dr. Katherine N. Hardesty Scholarship

A student who has a major within the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Applicant must have proven academic excellence with appropriate activities in the discipline. Applicant must also display service to the community or university and demonstrate vision for improvement in the criminal justice system.

Dr. Alida Merlo Award

Must be a graduating senior enrolled in SRU's Criminology and Criminal Justice major and hold the highest QPA among the majors. In case of a tie, the student with the highest number of credits at the end of the semester will receive the award.

The Jairus J. Moore Diversity, Inclusion, and Criminal Justice Scholarship

This scholarship is for a junior or senior pursuing a degree in criminal justice. Applicant must demonstrate academic achievement, have financial need, and submit a 500-word essay explaining "How to create a more diverse work culture." First preference is given to African-American students.

Dance

Thom and Christine Cobb Scholarship

Awards are made to senior dance majors. The award is given to a dance major of exceptional talent who shows vision, drive and mature approach to their future career goals as a dance professional.

Graduates of the late sixties (GLS) scholarship

Applicant must major in dance or physical education with at least a 3.0 GPA and 24 completed credits. A student enrolled in extracurricular activities is desired. This scholarship is non-renewable, however there is preference to the current recipient. This scholarship is currently closed.

Lucy Isacco Sack Academic Year Dance Scholarship

Available to sophomores and junior dance majors based on a minimum 3.0 GPA in Dance; 2.7 GPA overall; financial need, and involvement in dance department events and activities. Application required. The deadline is the beginning of the spring semester.

Lucy Isacco Sack Dance Scholarship for Summer Study

Available to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and senior dance majors who are current SRU students. Requires 3.0 GPA in Dance; 2.7 GPA overall. Involvement in dance department events and activities. Application required.

Lucy Isacco Sack Freshman and Transfer Student Scholarship

Available for all freshman and transfer students that are completing their second semester and are current and active dance majors at SRU. The award is given to an outstanding freshman or transfer student who demonstrates an exceptional work ethic, motivation, professionalism and talent. This scholarship will be applied toward the student's second year. The committee will consider the student's 3.0 GPA in dance, and 2.7 GPA overall, along with demonstrated commitment to the program. Lucy Isacco Sack Diversity Scholarship

Available to students of diversity, including men, to be used toward the tuition of their following academic year. Prospective dance majors must demonstrate a passion and commitment for dance as an art form, and demonstrate maturity and professionalism, in addition to involvement in dance department activities and events. Requires a 3.0 GPA in dance and an overall GPA of 2.7.

Bonnie McElhaney Lukasik '63 Scholarship for Dance and Physical Education

Must be a Dance or Physical Education major from Pennsylvania. Scholarship is awarded by the department chairs of Dance and Physical Education Department and alternates years. The deadline for this Scholarhsip is March 5th. Bonnie McElhaney Lukasik Scholarship Application is currently closed.

national honor society for dance arts-rising sophomore scholarship

All freshman dance majors at SRU may apply for the National Honor Society for Dance Arts Scholarship. The award is given to outstanding freshman students who demonstrate excellent artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in the field of dance. The committee will consider the students' dance ad overall QPA along with demonstrated commitment to the program.

SIGMA rho delta rising sophomore scholarship

Available to dance majors who are rising sophomores.

History

david d. dixon fellowship

Must be a BA History major with a demonstrated passion for the study of history. Student must be at least a junior. Preference will be given to a student who has contributed to programs at the Old Stone House. Students must submit an essay of 500 words or less explaining how their love of history contributed to their decision to pursue their education to sruhistorydept@sru.edu.

Emeritus fund

Applicant must be a history major or be in secondary education with a concentration in history/social studies. There must be a need for financial aid. The History Department Scholarship Committee will determine the recipient(s).

donna mckee memorial service award

The recipient will be a History Major who has achieved a Junior II status by the time of selection for use in meeting expenses for their Senior Year. This award may be given to a Secondary Education Major with a Social Studies concentration at the discretion of the department scholarship committee. This scholarship is not renewable. One recipient will be chosen by the History Department Scholarship Committee.

kelly prize for best undergraduate research project

Students must be a history or SEFE history major. Applicants must submit a history/historiographical paper (of at least 1,500 words) or research project (digital and poster projects eligible.) Submission materials must be sent to sruhistorydept@sru.edu

Leo I. Shapiro Memorial Scholarship

Students must have completed 62 credits, major in history or political science and have a minimum 3.0 QPA and demonstrate financial need. PA residency required.

donald shields kelly fund

Applicants may be either undergraduate or graduate. Must have financial need. Applicants must submit the best essay/paper on any aspect of the history and/or folklore of Slippery Rock and/or the Western Pennsylvania region.

Homeland/Corporate Security and Leadership

No scholarships are currently available.

Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Writing - English

The LLCW Scholarship application will open February 1st. The deadline for all listed English scholarships is March 22nd. LLCW Scholarship Application is currently closed. Eben Bass Memorial Scholarship

One award is for an outstanding graduating senior, and one for an outstanding second-semester junior (will have completed between 80-100 credit hours by the end of the spring term in which award is made) English or Secondary English Education majors who demonstrate excellence in academic work and for contributions to the English Department through extracurricular activities.

Bell-O'Connor Prize Scholarship

Available to a full-time senior English Writing/Editing student. Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Dr. Stephen J. and Dr. Elizabeth R. Curry Scholarship

Available to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in English. Must demonstrate financial need and academic excellence.

English Department Fund Scholarship

Full-time English major who demonstrates academic excellence and a strong record of departmental service. Preference given to a student who demonstrates financial need.

Kenneth esker and ruth madalyn harris scholarship

The student must be a full-time English or Education major with a minimum 3.0 GPA. This scholarship is renewable if the GPA is sustained.

Louis Razzano Annual Scholarship

Must be an English Major. Student must demonstrate financial need.

Louis Razzano Scholarship

Full-time student majoring in English, English Education, Professional or Creative Writing. Student must have sophomore or junior standing with a minimum cumulative QPA of 3.0 and a minimum of 20 credits earned at SRU. Student must also demonstrate financial need.

Rhesa Service Byers Endowed Scholarship

Student majoring in English or English Education. Must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. This scholarship is non-renewable.

bill smith stratford program scholarship

Applicant must be participating in the Stratford program and demonstrate financial need.

Carl and Louise Woodling Scholarship

Full-time student majoring in English or English Education. Student must have a minimum of 30 earned semester hours by the previous fall semester and must not have transferred in more than 36 semester hours.

Beverly Antis collaborative Piano Scholarship

Awarded by the Music Department to students/ensembles that are on the piano above and beyond the required time.

Dwight and Jeane Baker Scholarship

Awarded to either a stringed instrumentalist or pianist. Determined at audition. There is no deadline.

M. Kate Brennan Music Education Scholarship

Awarded to an outstanding Music Education major who has earned at least 60 credits at SRU and holds a 3.25 cumulative GPA. The deadline is February 15th. This application is currently closed.

Kris Chapin Memorial Flute Scholarship

Awarded to a flutist. A separate application is required.

Shiron Cooper Memorial Steel Pan Scholarship

Open to any major, but must be registered for SRU Panorama. Student should have strong leadership ability. Student must submit one new arrangement for Panorama each semester (fall and spring of the award year). This scholarship is awarded in the spring semester of the award year. The deadline is February 15th. This application is currently closed.

Marianne Cornetti Vocal Scholarship

Voice major. Award determined by anticipated or current contribution to the department solo vocal performance area. No minimum GPA exists for this scholarship but students must earn an A grade in their applied lessons. Multiple awards may be given and there is no deadline.

James E. and Gay K. Dull Scholarship

Instrumental music major. Award based on talent determined at audition. The award is renewable, and there is no deadline.

Mechelle Hawk Music Education Scholarship

Awarded to an outstanding junior music education major chosen by the music education faculty.

Dr. Stephen Hawk Jazz Scholarship

Student must be a full-time music major who demonstrates excellence as a jazz musician. Preference will be given to an instrumentalist.

Sue Manchester Hunt Memorial Scholarship

Student must be music major. Award is renewable with good academic standing.

Music Therapy for Social Justice Scholarship

Must have a commitment to social justice and be an incoming music therapy major. Submit a short essay on the importance of social justice in the field of music therapy here. The deadline is March 31st. This scholarship is currently closed.

Ronald Phillips Memorial Award for Bassoon

Applicants must be current bassoonists at SRU with preference being given to members of the Slippery Rock University Bassoon Studio. Award will be offered to one recipient. Applicants must perform a solo piece (with or without accompaniment) and present a short statement on how they embody one or more characteristics of Mr. Phillips (generous, hardworking, determined, kind, encouraging).

Piano scholarship

The student must be a music major and assist the music department with solo piano and piano accompanying needs. The recipient must have at least a 2.0 GPA.

Blase S. Scarnati Scholarship

Must demonstrate outstanding leadership as an active member of the SRU marching band. There is no deadline.

Sue Shuttleworth Music Therapy Scholarship

Music Therapy major who has earned at least 60 credits at SRU, holds at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and is actively involved in the music therapy club and is a member of the American Music Therapy Association. Applicants must also be registered for at least 12 credits (full-time) in the upcoming fall semester. The deadline is February 15th. This application is currently closed.

SRU Band scholarship

Awarded to one or more members of SRU's Band ensembles. The scholarship recipient will be determined by the Director of Bands along with the Music Department Scholarship Committee. Recipients must audition for both the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band and thereafter be a full participant.

Terry Steele Jazz Scholarship

Awarded to an outstanding jazz student. There is no deadline.

M. Clair and Marie Swope Scholarship

Sophomore or Junior music major in good academic standing who holds at least a 3.0 GPA in major and demonstrates financial need and strong potential for success in the music field. The application deadline is February 15. This application is currently closed.

swope citizenship award

Awarded to a current undergraduate student who has demonstrated leadership qualities within the Department of Music. Qualified candidates will not only have excelled in their musical endeavors, but emerged as leaders within the Department of Music student body through their participation in departmental events, encouragement of their peers, and dedication to the success of the department student body as a whole. Nominations are required to apply. Nominated students must submit a Swope Citizenship Award application. Applicants must complete at least one full semester of academic studies at Slippery Rock University and must maintain a 3.25 GPA.

Chad Williamson Memorial Vocal Scholarship

Awarded to a full-time voice major: winner chosen through fall vocal competition. Three awards are given - 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place. The deadline is October 8th. This application is currently closed.

Bonnie Winder Scholarship

Awarded to a sophomore or junior music major based on academic excellence and contribution to the department. The deadline is February 15th. This application is currently closed.

J. Kevin Woods Memorial Scholarship

A full-time instrumental music major in good academic standing with a 3.0 cumulative GPA in music courses. Preference will be given to outstanding wind performers from the junior and senior class. The deadline is February 15th.

Chase Carlson Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a Theatre major (incoming freshman through senior) who demonstrates, by audition, excellence in the performance of Shakespeare or muscial theatre. Auditions for the scholarship are held every fall. The scholarship is awarded in the spring.

Virginia Couillard Scholarship for Musical Theater

Awarded to an Acting major in the musical theater concentration. This scholarship is nonrenewable. Recipients are selected via audition every fall by the Theater Department faculty. The scholarship is awarded in the spring.

Cohen and Phetteplace Scholarship

Awarded to a Theatre major in the Design & Technology concentration who demonstrates, by portfolio review, excellence in the ability to make, justify, and execute production and design choices. Must be a sophomore, junior or senior. Portfolio submissions are accepted in the fall semester. The scholarship is awarded in the spring.

Mabel Eichler Vincent SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to a senior Theatre major with a 3.0 QPA overall and a 3.2 in Theatre. Students do NOT audition or apply for this scholarship - recipients are chosen in the fall by the Theatre faculty from eligible senior majors. The scholarship is awarded in the spring.
