SRU nonprofit contingent attends leadership institute

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - A group of 10 Slippery Rock University nonprofit majors attended the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance's annual Alliance Management Institute, Jan. 3-6, in Houston, Texas.
The SRU contingent joined more than 600 other undergraduates from 26 colleges and universities from across the U.S. at the institute, which featured workshops and presentations from various nonprofit administrators, including David Williams, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish.
"Attending this conference and meeting hundreds of other students who are as passionate about this work as I am was powerful," said Mary Krewduk, an SRU senior from Ridgway and president of the Student Nonprofit Alliance. "My experiences in Houston underscored that my career choice is the right one for me. I look forward to graduating in May and to begin making a difference in my community."
Upon completion of their undergraduate degree at SRU, nonprofit majors receive the certified nonprofit credential that assures nonprofit agencies that graduates have met the NLA's 10 competencies.
Those competencies ensure that certified students are meeting equivalent learning outcomes as part of their certified nonprofit professional credential. Each competency has an associated rubric with learning topics and learning outcomes that each NLA campus uses within its programs. The CNP designation is recognized throughout the nonprofit sector. More than 70 SRU students have earned the CNP.
Included among those competencies are: communication, marketing and public relations; cultural competency and diversity; financial resource development and management; foundations and management of the nonprofit sector; governance, leadership and advocacy; legal and ethical decision making; personal and professional development; program development; volunteer and human resource management and future of the nonprofit sector.
SRU students were recognized by Susan Schmidt, NLA president and CEO, who said: "We were very happy to have the well-prepared and passionate students from Slippery Rock University join us, and we look forward to continuing the affiliation between SRU and the NLA."

Alice Del Vecchio, assistant professor, interdisciplinary programs and director of SRU's philanthropy and nonprofit management program, accompanied the students.
