SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - For Matthew Erickson and David Krayesky, once was not enough.

While Slippery Rock University recognizes the challenges faced by persons with disabilities during its November President's Commission for Disability Issues Month, the committee co-chairs thought they needed to do more.

The duo will tackle one additional day, Feb. 24, to continue educating others via a Disability Sports Night from 6-8 p.m. at the ARC. The event is co-sponsored by the Recreational Therapy Club at SRU and the Adapted Physical Activity Council.

The event will feature a number of games adapted for the physically disabled, including: wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball, rugby, tennis, audible baseball, goal ball and track.

Competitors will have the opportunity to rotate through each sport to learn and experience participation from a disabled person's perspective. Pizza and beverages will also be provided.

"We encourage every student to participate, whether they have a physical disability or not," said Krayesky, an associate professor biology. "In fact, we feel it is especially important for those without disabilities to be present, show their support and actively learn what life and play are like for those with a physical impairment."

"We are just thrilled to have this opportunity to teach those who do not have a thorough understanding of disability sports, what it is all about," said Wendy Fagan, instructor of physical and health education and member of the APAC. "Not only will they get to learn, but also to participate. Both of which are valuable lessons."

Erickson, an associate professor of special education, hopes the event will help to foster a more inclusive environment on campus.

"Our goal is to not only promote awareness for individuals with disabilities, but to continue to spread the word to a wider audience as we make activities like this a habit."
