SRU creates new ‘da Vinci Faculty Fellow’ position

SRU’s new da Vinci Faculty Fellow will work to increase student-faculty research and presentations at both campus and national conferences.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University is creating a "da Vinci Faculty Fellow" position to help expand undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity and strengthen collaboration between departments. The fellow, who will be selected from among existing faculty, will also work to promote minority faculty and student involvement in research and international partnerships.

Philip Way, SRU provost and vice president for academic and student affairs, created and approved the position. Brad Wilson, interim associate provost for transformational experiences, said the position would report to him.

Wilson said he is soliciting applications from faculty to select the fellow. Whoever is selected will be released from teaching one course a semester to support the time need for the position.

The name pays tribute to Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), the Italian Renaissance man who painted the "Mona Lisa" and advanced science and mathematics.

"It is named after Leonardo because of the connotation of ability to do things in many areas, crossing college boundaries," Wilson said.

The new faculty fellow position will be similar to the Teaching Fellow in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Technology.

Wilson said the new fellow would:

• Expand undergraduate research, scholarship and creative opportunities to include collaborations with business and non-profit organizations as well as between higher education institutions;

• Expand opportunities for international exchange with respect to research and creative activity;

• Develop programs and partnerships with academic colleges and departments, as well as non-academic departments;

• Promote the integration of undergraduate research into curriculum; and

• Promote diversity and inclusion in research.

The fellow builds on SRU's commitment to the value of undergraduate research, which is most evident during the University's annual Student Symposium for Research, Scholarship and Creative Achievement. Students have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty members on research projects and present findings at regional and national conferences.
