SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - It has been said that variety is the spice of life. The old adage apparently holds true in the world of awards as well as six staffers and two student workers from Slippery Rock University's Office of Communication and Public Affairs, captured nine CUPPIE Awards presented by CUPRAP, the creative excellence in marketing and communications organization, as part of its annual awards competition March 9 in Hershey.

Sandy Busch, graphic communication director, now in her 16th year in the department, created and/or art directed a trio of award-winning entries.

She won a Gold Award for her "Holocaust Remembrance" poster; won a Bronze Award for the "History Series On ... Rights and Liberties" poster collaboration with Tyler Sing, a senior art major and student designer from Pittsburgh; and earned Honorable Mention honors for another joint effort with Sing, the "History Series On ... Food" poster.

"It's always special to be recognized by your peers for the work you've done," said Busch. "To be able to team up with each of our student designers is always an honor; to have our work singled out makes that honor all the more fulfilling."

Gold Awards were also earned by Chenoa Gregory, a senior art major and student designer from Freeport, for her in-house "Presidential Scholarship Gala" print piece; and to Robb King, associate executive director in CPA, in the writing/creative headline category for "All Chalked Up," which accompanied a recent The ROCK magazine article about SRU alumnus Erik Greenawalt, a weekend chalk artist.

A Silver Award went to Gregory for her "SRU Earth Month" poster.

Bronze Awards were earned by Jon Holtz, athletic communication director, for Rock Football game day program covers (print/covers); Darcy White, web communication director, and Aaron Moore, digital design director, for the SRU Holiday Video Card (electronic/video); and Rita Abent, executive director, for "Bytes Meets Bites" (writing/creative headline), from a recent The ROCK magazine article about Sam Thangiah, professor of computer science, and his love affair with scuba diving.

More than 380 entries in 35 categories were received this year from colleges, universities and providers of private, specialized and secondary education in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland and Wisconsin.

CUPRAP is dedicated to advancing the understanding of higher education and enhancing the professional development of its members.
