SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Jerry Chmielewski, Slippery Rock University's interim dean for the College of Health, Environment and Science, has been named to the permanent position effective July 1, 2017. He has been serving in the interim role since June 29, 2015.

Chmielewski, who joined the SRU faculty in 1990 as an assistant professor teaching plant biology, environmental biology and biostatistics, was named to the interim post following the retirement of Susan Hannam.

"These are challenging though exciting and changing times in the College because of professional program development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels," said Chmielewski. "I have been fortunate to work with a great team of dedicated chairs, assistant chairs and program directors, who in concert with their faculty, facilitate achievement of college, department, program and individual goals. I look forward to being a part of the growth and success of these respective new programs as well as the University."

Chmielewski had served as the acting associate dean of the former College of Arts and Sciences and was chairperson of the Department of Biology for nearly two decades.

He has more than 30 years of research experience and published over 100 scholarly research articles on various aspects of plant biology.

Chmielewski has been called a "master teacher who actively engages his students" and has received praise from his students as part of their faculty evaluations. He was active in helping the University develop its recent physician assistant program.

Chmielewski earned his undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Waterloo.
