SRU launches Kaleidoscope Arts Festival April 14

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's two-week Kaleidoscope Arts Festival will get under way at 12:30 p.m., April 14, with an Opening Ceremony of live student performance and visual art presentation in Boozel Dining Hall.

The Music Therapy Club at SRU will demonstrate how it uses instruments and singing as a therapeutic tool. A student printmaker and drawing student, representing the Art Society, will create art live in the lobby. Art will be available for purchase.

"Kaleidoscope strives each year to highlight the outstanding talent and hard work of the Arts students on campus," said Deanna Brookens, festival director and instructor of theatre. "I'm thrilled that this year we have the good fortune to be able to showcase students from both music and visual art during the Opening Celebration. It will also give the SRU campus a peek into the diverse programming that makes up the Kaleidoscope Arts Festival each year."

Kaleidoscope, SRU's 15th annual arts festival, runs from April 14-28. This year the festival will feature 28 dance, theatre, music, literary and visual arts events.

Among the performances, student artists and SRU faculty will offer a senior dance concert; music concerts featuring flute, jazz, trumpet, orchestra, saxophone, woodwind and string chamber performances; theatre of psychological horror; Sixty Second Lectures from the Frederick Douglass Institute; and a "Bollywood Night" of Indian cuisine, henna tattoos and dance.

In addition to the SRU led performances, Kaleidoscope will host an artist in residence. Tim Stapleton, a multi-disciplinary artist, will present his play "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms."
