SRU’s students to clean up campus, community

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Green and White Society at Slippery Rock University will collaborate with hundreds of volunteers for a campus and community clean up event from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 16.

The day begins with registration and distribution of free drawstring backpacks, donuts, coffee and bananas at the Advanced Technology and Science Hall. Volunteers will then be put into teams and assigned to a variety of locations across campus and throughout downtown Slippery Rock.

According to Kylie Reiber, a senior music therapy-voice major from Ontario, New York, who is serving as the event coordinator, volunteers will receive a quick tutorial prior to being dispersed.

"We'll show them the difference between what's considered a recyclable and what's considered trash," said Reiber.

Each group will be armed with black trash bags, blue recyclable bags and buckets to collect composting items, such as banana peels and apple cores.

In addition, each volunteer will receive a water bottle in order to stay hydrated throughout the event, she said.

Volunteers, which last numbered more than 400, will include SRU students, faculty, staff and community members.
