SRU festival features coal-mining photo lecture

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Emily Simons, an educator with the Maine-based art group Beehive Design Collective, will present "The True Cost of Coal" at 3:30 p.m., April 21, in Slippery Rock University's University Union. The 90-minute photo lecture about mountaintop coal mining is part of SRU's two-week Kaleidoscope Arts Festival.

Simons said the group crafts bees and beehive illustrations to use as a metaphor for presenting narratives about the group's concerns with coal mining in Appalachia.

The Beehive Design Collective formed in the late 1990s to give environmental storytellers a way spread an environmental message in a fun manner.

Kaleidoscope, SRU's 15th annual arts festival, runs from April 14-28. This year the festival will feature 28 dance, theatre, music, literary and visual arts events. Children's Day will be offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 23, at the Robert A. Macoskey Center foe Sustainable Systems Education and Research. Programs will include earth-friendly activities.
