SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - A program of jazz compositions in the big band style will be presented by the Slippery Rock University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band at 7:30 p.m., April 28, in Swope Music Hall. The presentation is part of SRU's 15th Annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival.

Jason Kush, SRU assistant professor of music, will direct. He said the groups would cover various styles spanning the history of the modern big band.

Some of the numbers will be works that were commissioned by the ensemble for a CD it will record later this month. Songs include "University Dance," Quiescence," "The Llama," "Convertible Burt" and "One Day Wonder."

The Jazz Ensemble performs on campus and at jazz festivals in the U.S. and overseas. It was selected to be the only college jazz group in the state to perform at the March 31-April 2 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Conference in Hershey. Members are selected by audition.

The Jazz Lab Band is a large group that students join to develop their jazz musicianship, Kush said.

Tickets for the April 28 concert are $3 for students, $5 for general.

Kaleidoscope, SRU's 15th annual arts festival, runs from April 14-28. This year the festival will feature 28 dance, theatre, music, literary and visual arts events. Children's Day will be offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 23, at the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research. Programs will include earth-friendly activities.
