Girl scouts earning badges

April 14, 2017

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Since 1912, the Girl Scouts of the USA have built "girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place."

This mission has driven many young western Pennsylvanian women to not only empower themselves through community service - as well as selling Thin Mints door-to-door - but provided an influence in the classroom.

With that in mind, approximately 300 Girl Scouts from Daisies to Ambassadors will participates in the 8th Annual Invention Convention from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 29 at Neshannock High School.

The event, which focuses on STEM agendas, particularly as it pertains to invention, technology and engineering, will rotate the Girl Scouts through a series of exciting scientific stations.

Slippery Rock University's student chapter of the National Science Teachers Association will provide 19 volunteers to assist with the event's activities which include a rock and mineral exploration station and a lunar eclipse kit.

Through the event, Brownies will be able to earn the home scientist badge; Junior Scouts, the product designer badge; and Cadettes, the special agent badge. Daisies, Senior Scouts and Ambassadors will each be able to earn a fun patch. <

"Every year, we have seen this program grow and we have watched the special interaction the Girl Scouts get to have with our students," said Robert Snyder, SRU professor of elementary education and early childhood.

"Because many of our elementary education students are females, it has been special for these Girl Scouts to have those adult role models who are excited about science and who want to share that passion with them."
