The Rocket captures 23 SCJ awards

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Rocket, the independent, student newspaper serving Slippery Rock University, has captured first place in overall newspaper excellence (for publications published weekly or less) from the Society for Collegiate Journalists.

The Rocket also earned third-place honors for its companion website, www.theonlinerocket.com.

The awards are part of SCJ's 2015-16 annual contest recognizing excellence in collegiate journalism.

In addition to the two newspaper awards, Rocket staffers won 21 awards for individual excellence, including:

  • News photo: First place, "LGBT issues addressed on campus" by Rebecca Dietrich;
  • Feature photo: Second place, "UPB welcomes back students," by Rebecca Dietrich;
  • Sports photo: First place, "Strong first half ensures round one win for Rock football," by Kendall Scott;
  • Editorial cartoon: Third place, "Uber gives students more options," by Kendall Scott;
  • Graphic illustration: Second place, "Slippery Rock ranks as 11th safest college town," by Karleigh Santry;
  • Individual multi-media sports story: First place, "Rock hosts 2015 Professional Disc Golf Championship," by Cody Nespor;
  • Individual multi-media sports story: Second place: "New women's soccer coach focuses on team morale," by Emily Brown;
  • Photo slideshow: First place, "PDGA Pro Worlds Disc Golf Championship," by Rebecca Dietrich;
  • Photo slideshow: Second place, "Day of the Dead," by Rebecca Dietrich;
