SRU’s ‘Children’s Day’ offers fun, educational activities

SRU’s “Children’s Day/Earth Day Celebration” is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 23, at the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research. Activities, games and performances will be offered.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's "Children's Day/Earth Day Celebration" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 23 promises to be fun for the whole family. Organizers have planned a full day of arts and crafts, games, performances and earth friendly demonstrations.

The program, at SRU's Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research, is as part of SRU's 15th Annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival. Event admission is free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The rain location is the University Union.

The schedule includes:

  • The Moraine Elementary Choir at 11 a.m.;
  • An interactive drum circle presented by the Music Therapy Club at SRU at noon;
  • Creative drama by 10 local elementary school students at 1 p.m.;
  • The New Castle Mini Stars at 2 p.m.; and
  • Local musician Sandy McConnell who will round out the day at 3 p.m.

Free arts and crafts and games will be offered throughout the day.

"Children's Day is such a wonderful community and family-focused event," said Deanna Brookens, SRU instructor of theatre and Kaleidoscope director. "I feel such satisfaction in seeing how excited the kids are after having their faces painted, making crafts and watching the live performances.

"Kaleidoscope really strives to be a positive presence in the community, offering artwork and programming that people in the area can look forward to, get involved with and enjoy," she said.

For their event, music therapy students will sing songs accompanied by acoustic guitars, egg shakers and drums. The drum circle involves letting children get involved in making music.

Brookens said 10 children in grades kindergarten through second grade would present a short performance inspired by the story "The Magic Garden," which has a theme of taking care of the earth.

For the Earth Days component, the program will offer sustainable vendors, demonstrations and information displays. Children will be able to make a spin-art Frisbee that uses eco-friendly Frisbees. SRU's Stone House Center for Public Humanities will sponsor a paper beads activity.

SRU's Macoskey Center is located at 247 Harmony Road. Parking is free.
