SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The awards keep rolling in for The Rocket, the independent, student-run newspaper serving Slippery Rock University. The American Scholastic Press Association recognized the The Rocket with two national awards for 2017, adding to a list of other honors for the academic year.

The Rocket was one of three newspapers in the country to earn "First Place with Special Merit" distinction from colleges with enrollments of 2,501 or more. The ASPA recognized the top-scoring publications by providing newspapers feedback based on style, format, content and presentation.

Additionally, The Rocket earned recognition in one of the 15 special categories for "Outstanding Sports Coverage" of its Nov. 18, 2016, special edition that previewed The Rock's men's and women's basketball seasons, among other articles.

The ASPA is the second organization to recognize The Rocket this month, after the Society Professional Journalists honored The Rocket with five Region 4 "Mark of Excellence" awards for the best collegiate journalism.
